We just came back from a kind of road trip in Bulgaria. We wanted to go to hike or mountain bike in Romania but unfortunately the weather didn't look too promising this weekend. Luckily Bulgaria isn't that far away and the weather there wasn't as bad as here in Romania.
We ended up driving way too much in two days for my taste, didn't get to see the Pelicans we wanted to see in Persina Nature Park and managed to have our photo taken by a traffic camera. A good set of failures for one weekend one might say, but at least we got to see the humongous Devetashka cave, Pobitite Kamani stones near Varna and the ancient city of Nessebar by the Black Sea. I also think that the Bulgarian police won't find me in Romania ;).
If you ever want to visit the Persina Nature Park in Bulgaria, make sure that you know exactly where it is. The locals don't speak much else than Bulgarian and didn't seem to know where the place is and there are no signs to speak of. Getting there is only one part of the puzzle though as you will need to hire someone to actually take you to the island(!) where the most interesting things (birds) in the park are. We of course hadn't booked anything in advance and the town next to the park was as good as dead. We ended up walking along the river bank and wishing we had a canoe of our own!
Driving a car in Bulgaria is both good and bad. The traffic doesn't feel dangerous, one can get to places one wouldn't otherwise and gasoline is cheap. Pot holes are what make driving in Bulgaria a pain though. Some roads are totally fine but many are not, and sometimes there can be really nasty pot holes on roads that have been fine for the last ten kilometers and are again perfect for the next ten. The fact that one has to constantly concentrate on watching out for pot holes makes driving in Bulgaria a pretty tiring affair.
