Montenegro in 2009 - Getting there

Our ride

I don't know even where to start because we did this trip already a couple of years ago, but I guess the beginning is just as good as any place to start! We did this trip in the summer of 2009 and spent thirty days travelling around Montenegro. Montenegro is a small Balkan country by the Adriatic sea, and it was part of the former Yugoslavia for quite some time. A whole month might sound like a lot to spend in such a small country, but in the end it felt like it was just enough! I'm not going to write about each and every day of this trip like I have done with many other trips, but I'll tell you about the most interesting places and incidents instead. Have fun!

Why Montenegro you might ask. Back in 2009 Inna was still living in Ukraine, and it wasn't easy or cheap for her to get a Schengen visa. In addition to that we wanted to go to some relatively cheap country with not too many tourists. As soon as Inna found out that there are cheap organized tours from Ukraine to Montenegro we knew where we would be going. In this case organized meant that a travel agency arranged a bus for the group and all the necessary documents for Inna (and for everyone who needed them). At 80 euros for a round trip it was ridiculously cheap way to travel but not the most comfortable for sure. The bus trip from Lviv to Budva took almost exactly thirty hours and went through Romania and Serbia. It goes without saying that the toilet in the bus was out of order.

After the bus trip it was time to take it easy!

After the horribly long bus trip we found ourselves in the city of Budva by the beautiful Adriatic Sea. The city is pretty small, but the old town is kind of interesting even though it's full of tourists and shops. We were lucky enough to find a camping site right in the middle of the city and of course we pitched our tent there in the shade of a fig tree. One thing worth mentioning in Budva besides the sea and the old town is Ćevapi, the local kebab-like grilled dish. Ćevapi instantly became a favorite for both of us and we even found our favorite ćevapi cook! The great thing was that we would get only the meat and the bread from the cook and then add all the other incredients like fresh tomato, onion and cucumber and some mixed spices by ourselves.

I even found a new girlfriend right away!

The old town was crowded even, or perhaps especially, in the night.

I went to visit my Montenegrin girlfriend last autumn but she was nowhere to be found. What a disappointment!
