Montenegro summary
This report has been a long time coming, but it's about to be ready finally. Even after all these years (seven of them at the time of writing!) I remember our trip to Montenegro surprisingly well and a lot better than many other trips of ours. I think that tells something about the magnificence of the country :).
We didn't have much money to spare in 2009 but I think our trip was so interesting and exciting exactly because of that. We used the cheapest possible transportation (walking a lot, hitch hiking, using local buses and even taking a bus all the way from Ukraine instead of flying), slept in our tent most of the time and used our camping stove a lot for cooking food. Nowadays we have a bit more disposable income, but I still like to travel the way we used to because of the adventurous feel of it!
Even though I feel we saw almost everything in Montenegro I feel we should go back there again one day. Perhaps not this year or the next, but maybe in 30 or 40 years :). Durmitor is such a beautiful place and we still need to explore the rainforest in Biogradska Gora more!
Pros
- Not many tourists (at least not in 2009)
- Montenegro had a very original feel. It didn't feel like western European countries usually do.
- Cheap prices for transportation and accommodation
- A lot of different things things to see and to do.
- Short distances
Cons
- Perhaps a bit too hot in the middle of the summer, but that can be solved by going to the mountains ;).
- Some parts of the shore near Budva are infested with big Russian hotels that reserve the beaches only for themselves.
