Thailand summary
Thailand was the first Asian country we've been to and it surprised me positively in many ways. I've heard many praising comments about Thailand and I expected a country spoiled and packed with tourists, but I was wrong. Maybe we got lucky because of the not so safe situation in Bangkok and it was the rainy season too.
We didn't see anything dangerous in Thailand apart from the tourists riding their scooters without helmets (we of course wore ours!). It took a while to get used to the humid climate and the intense traffic but other than that everything went smoothly.
I somehow expected to see more exotic foods, but cockroaches, bugs, snails etc. were nowhere to be found! Instead rice was everywhere, which of course wasn't a big surprise, but after two weeks I was pretty much fed up with it. After about two weeks in Thailand it was nice to head for a new country but we knew that we'd come back to Thailand sooner or later :).
Pros
- People are really friendly, smiling all the time and eager to help.
- Food is cheap, mostly really tasty and you can find a street restaurant almost anywhere.
- One can find a 7-11 almost anywhere. Not only they sell the bloody cold and tasty brain freeze but they also always have air condition, which is a bliss in Thailand.
- Renting a moped is ridiculously cheap, but remember to drive safely!
- No need to buy a map, since you can always find one for free pretty easily.
Cons
- A lot of people trying to sell you something or offering help that is not needed nor wanted.
- Never take a pre-organized trip if you can avoid one. You'll save money but also in the end it's probably faster and easier to do everything on your own, as funny as it sounds.
- Streets and rivers can smell really bad!
