The railway station in Ipoh

The next day didn't begin well although the weather had improved a lot during the night. After taking a taxi to the center of Ipoh we started searching for a better hotel or guest house. It was easier said than done and it took us hours before we found anything. At least we saw practically all the sights in Ipoh while searching! Finally we found the cheapest place in town, Tokyo Hotel (no joke). The hotel wasn't very clean but at least we had a window and a shower in our room.

We wanted to visit Gua Tempurung, the biggest limestone cave in Peninsular Malaysia, but the taxi drivers told us that we should go there early in the morning because of the water levels in the cave. This time we believed the locals and took a taxi to Kellie's Castle, a haunted mansion not far away from Ipoh. The mansion was pretty impressive although we didn't meet any ghosts :). The rainy weather added to the spooky atmosphere but still the only thing we could find was a nestful of small birds. An hour was all we had there since the place was about to close. I guess we pretty much saw everything but an extra thirty minutes would have been nice anyway.

On the way back it started to rain more and more and soon the streets were literally flooding. A few cars had driven off the road because it wasn't clear where the road ends and a ditch starts. Our driver seemed to know what he was doing and we got back to the center safely.

Late in the evening we walked to the bus station to check for buses to the caves and on the way to our hotel moslems were gathering for their evening prayer and hinduists had a loud and bright festival of some kind :). We didn't feel like asking them what it was because of our bad experiences with Indians in George Town.

This is one of the big sights in Ipoh - believe it or not.

It looked like the sewers didn't work at all.

it started quite fast and flooded a lot! I was afraid that it would never stop...

and the temperature after the rain was the same or it became colder?

The rain itself didn't change the temperature much but the sun did. In shade or during cloudy weather it was mostly bearable but otherwise too hot for my taste.
