The Last Full Day in Malaysia
In the morning it was time to say goodbyes to Malacca and head back to Kuala Lumpur. The bus ride took about two hours again, and right after getting back we walked to the same guest house we had used before. We were happy to hear that the same room was available, but that was pretty much the only good thing left. The room smelled of tobacco, and I felt like a headache started developing right after entering the room. In addition to that the only computer didn't work so there was no free Internet either.
We were too lazy to start searching for another place so we stayed there. It was for one night only anyway. In the evening we walked around the neighborhood and relaxed by some beautiful palaces and mosques. The Sultan Abdul Samad building appeared particularly beautiful with all the lights around and the KL tower and the Petronas towers behind it.
It was our last full day in Malaysia and we were ready to move on! So what did we think about Malaysia? We saw old and new parts, original and colonial culture, sun and rain, cities and jungles, a mixture of at least half a dozen races and cultures. We didn't like it all but we liked a lot! It feels like Malaysia has something for almost everyone, and we didn't even see it all. We had plans to go to the island of Borneo for diving, to see orangutans and to climb and hike, but we didn't have time for it.
Pros
- There's a lot to see and something for everyone, and different cities and landscapes aren't too far away from each other so you can visit many different places in short time.
- Prices are low.
- Most people speak good English.
- Hiking without a guide is allowed.
- The Chinese people were very friendly and helpful!
Cons
- Indians. We had almost only bad experiences with them. They were unfriendly, looked constantly angry and didn't have any manners.
- Tourist women can't really wear the way they are used to. Long skirts and sleeved shirts are preferred instead of shorts and tops.
- Prices for activities are high.
- Measuring distance seems to be a task of high difficulty for Malaysians. A hundred meters can be half a kilometer in reality and vice versa.
- People aren't as friendly as in Thailand.
Funny or strange things
- The country seems to be full of warning signs. Everything you do in Malaysia is at your own risk!
- Ketchup doesn't seem to exist. Whenever we asked for ketchup we got soy sauce!
- The locals were yelling at us from moving cars quite often. Most often just "hello!" or "hey yo!". We never found out what the reason was.
- The locals were almost always referring to me as "Sir" or "Mister".
- Taxies are trying to get your attention by beeping constantly. It started to get on our nerves after a couple of days.
- The Indian districts smelled special with all their spices.
- Malaysian flags can be seen all over. One can find entire buildings covered in their flags!
- Most cats don't have tails in Malaysia. Another mystery for us. Perhaps rats are so big there that the cats are fighting a losing battle.
