Ljubljana
Our fourth day in Slovenia was reserved for the capital city of Ljubljana. The city has less than 300 000 people and it's easy to cover the most interesting parts by just walking around for a day. For some reason I had pretty high expectations for Ljubljana, but unfortunately I didn't like the city as much as I had hoped. Perhaps the crappy weather played its part too - The city would probably have been more enjoyable in sunny or at least dry weather.
We started the day by walking in the very center of Ljubljana, visiting the Dragon Bridge and walking by the Ljubljanica river. The river led us to a busy market in the center of the city where both locals and tourists were buying daily groceries and souvenirs. The market appeared to be very lively and not there just for the tourists and it created a nice atmosphere. The most peculiar thing in the market was the milk vending machine from which people, mostly local, were buying fresh milk. Most of the people even used their own jars and bottles for it! It's great to see that such milk is available even in the modern world. We also met a girl in the market who was advertising some deodorants and she offered to measure our stress levels from our fingers, probably to show us that we need the deodorants because we are so stressed and sweat a lot. For the test we had to put one of our fingers against a piece of plastic and hold it there for half a minute or so. Both of us had average stress level so I guess the test wasn't a total catastrophe :).
From the market we headed towards the castle of Ljubljana that stands on top of a small hill over the very center of the city. The walk wasn't anything special and the castle wasn't really worth it. Instead of a nice old castle that we expected to see we faced something that surely resembled a castle from the outside, but inside everything had been modernized with a lot of glass walls and doors and there really was no feeling left whatsoever. Fortunately at least some parts of the castle are reserved for museum use and still remind us of the castle's colorful history. For whatever reason there was a Camel (the tocabbo brand) exhibition in the castle at the time of our visit. The exhibition didn't make any sense to us, but there was a possibility to have a photo taken of you dressed as a pin-up model. I've always wanted to be one so it was a no-brainer!
After the castle we visited the old Roman ruins and just walked in the old town. In the old town we visited a nice tea shop that seemed to have all the possible tea types and flavors from all over the world - a place for Inna to be for sure! After a couple of hours of walking we were really soaked and decided to head back to the hostel via the Triple Bridge that is a combination of three separate bridges crossing the Ljubljanica river almost at the same place. There's nothing spectacular about the bridges but it sure is interesting why three bridges have been built across the river right next to each other.
Finally on the way back to the hostel we walked through the famous Metelkova City, which is the center of alternative culture in Ljubljana. The "city" is almost fully covered in graphitis and depending on the time of your visit you can find for example art galleries and concerts there in addition to the clubs and bars that are there to stay. All in all it's a very interesting place although it was totally dead at the time of our visit (Sunday night during Easter).
