Tasty Italian Cuisine

As I had been driving almost constantly for three days I felt like a rest day could be useful. We again ate the sweet and tasty breakfast and started driving. Right next to Brolo there was a cosy small town called Gioiosa Mareina where we walked for a while.

A clean park in Gioiosa Mareina

A mini palm tree

After walking we started driving again and soon became hungry. Once again it was siesta time but we decided to visit a pizza place anyway as we saw an advertisement next to the road. In a while we were driving through an olive garden to something that looked like someone's private house. I was sure that it was closed but Inna walked in and asked about it anyway. To our surprise the restaurant was working!

This curvy road took us down from the hill.

The woman inside didn't speak a single word of English but another customer helped us a bit and the rest we managed with German. The woman didn't offer us menu and we didn't see prices anywhere. The meal started with a plateful of cheese and it was by far the worst food I've ever eaten abroad. I tasted both of the cheeses and immediately knew that this is something I can't eat. Even Inna wasn't able to finish hers and I wrapped up the cheese in handkerchiefs and hid the package in my backpack. The rest of the food was edible at least but we were quite shocked to see the price of almost fifty euros!

A tasty Italian meal!

With our stomachs full we just kept driving and saw a nice-looking church on a hill on the way to the city of Milazzo. Naturally we wanted to take a closer look at the church and we were there in no time. Inna wasn't allowed to enter the church because of her miniskirt but the church looked better outside anyway. Next to the church there were some ancient ruins but the area was closed. I was able to take a peek inside and it didn't look like we missed much. The views from the hill were great though!

Inna wasn't allowed to enter this beautiful cathedral.

Inna once again found her favourite plants :).

Although it was already getting late we wanted to see Milazzo, another city on the northern coast of Sicily. Milazzo looked like another Sicilian city, in a good way. The main sight in Milazzo seems to be the big medieval castle, which indeed is very beautiful. We searched for something else to see but didn't find anything worth mentioning.

Six trash bins in a row

Prisoners

We had had enough of restaurant for that day so for dinner we bought a grilled chicken along with some salads in a supermarket and enjoyed it all in our hotel room. So far the well known Italian kitchen hasn't showed its strength to us.

and...eh...it seems that on the last pic there is a nose (outside) and hand (in the distance) %) strange creature imprisoned))

Inna should have worn pants or a long skirt for the cathedral. The distant part sure resembles hand in a way :).

ah, that happens quite often in our cathedrals, too.once an aggressive nun shouted at me because I've entered cathedral in black jeans. I told her that I don't believe in God and I wan't to see frescos and paintings...but she was like Devil in the Flesh %)

Hehe, I don´t understand the situation in the last picture of these. Once they have opuntias around the garden they don´t need any fence! :)

I hope that "tasty" cheese was eaten by some hare or fox... we weren't able to eat it :)

Heh, yeah. I wouldn't like to try running through a bush of those fellows! I doubt even animals would eat the cheese ;). Perhaps some insect could.

eh)) focaccia in Portovenere is (was) really worth tasting)) well, the worst thing is Сarciofi alla romana O_o fried artichokes =/
#9 Milton  (reg.)  -  13.02.2011 20:27
Focaccia looks something that could taste good. I don't know if I've ever tried artichokes in any form so I can't really imagine what the taste could be like :).

Maybe we actually tried focaccia in Siracusa? But we were supposed to eat pizza ;) Anyway, our pizza looked a lot like focaccia pictures I found with google :)
#11 Julia  (reg.)  -  17.02.2011 11:06
well, it seems that focaccia is smth between bread and pizza %) so, maybe it was focaccia in Siracusa. But this type of pizza differs from one region to another %) so...focaccia in Rome was nothing compared to that in Portovenere %)))
#12 Milton  (reg.)  -  17.02.2011 22:04
Yeah it might have been focaccia in Siracusa. The description I read fits but the pictures I saw didn't look like the food we ate but perhaps Julia's comment explains it :).

I have just noticed that the sausages we had in that cafe are full of greasy "salo" :). I wonder how Joni didn't complain about it back then :-p.
#14 Julia  (reg.)  -  16.03.2011 21:00
haha %) well...it seems that the taste was much better in comparison with cheese :P
#15 Milton  (reg.)  -  16.03.2011 22:16
That's exactly what happened! I for sure noticed the fat in the salami but after tasting the cheese I couldn't have cared less :)!
