Kranj
Thanks to our nicely scheduled flights we had time to visit one more place in Slovenia even on the last day. That one place happened to be the old city of Kranj that is located only about twenty kilometers from the capital. Before taking a bus there we visited one of the many bakeries you can find all over Slovenia. It seems that the bakeries are quite popular amongst the locals and in my opinion for a good reason as the pies, pastries and breads they sell are not only cheap but really tasty as well!
Despite the short distance the bus trip to Kranj took almost an hour, and it felt like we stopped on almost every possible bus stop there was on the way. The day was Easter Monday and it meant that pretty much every shop was closed, but we managed to find a small private shop next to the bus station where we bought a couple of bananas and something to drink to survive for a while longer.
Kranj resembles Celje, the city we visited the day before, quite a lot. Kranj also has a smallish old town and it lies next to a big hill on top of which stands a castle. On the other hand the old town of Kranj is a lot more beautiful than the one in Celje, but the castle is a lot smaller and it lies in ruins. We didn't have too much time to spare so we started climbing towards the castle right away after our arrival. The route goes up a narrow path and it takes about half an hour to reach the top. On top the path meets a small road which takes you to the castle in a couple of minutes. Like I mentioned above, the castle is in really bad condition and there isn't much to see to be honest. On top of this there's a small hotel of some kind right next to the castle to kill the last bits of beauty left. Luckily the view over the charming old town of Kranj is at least great there.
Roughly half an hour later we were back at the bus station with mud all over our shoes and some on our pants too. The weather was better than it had been in three days, which cheered us up quite a bit. The old town of Kranj is rather small but at the same time very cosy and beautiful. Almost right next to the bus station there's a small church standing on a small grass-covered hill that is surrounded by a beautiful stone wall. The view over the tile roofed buildings was really pleasing to the eye, but unfortunately clouds covered all the mountains behind, and we had to settle for the board by the wall describing and naming all the mountains that could be seen from there on a clear day.
After the church hill we strolled around the old town and tried to visit some museum, but it was closed because of Easter. In a couple of hours we had seen practically everything Kranj had to offer and took a bus back to Ljubljana and from there to the airport. Not much happened on the way back, and we arrived at home at around midnight, just in time for the working day next morning.
